$5 Beds

About 5 years ago (give or take a couple of years) we were on the search for a new bed for my oldest son. He had been using part of a bunk bed that my husband used when he was a kid (and it was soooo ugly!) I really wanted to buy something new, partially because my son was in an "I don't want any more old junk in my room" phase and partially because I rarely buy furniture new and it was about time! We searched and searched and really found nothing we were thrilled with. The only ones we liked at all were way too much (in the $1,000+ range) and even those weren't anything special. So when I saw this pair of beds at a garage sale for $10 for the pair I gave up on buying a new bed and nabbed them! One was in horrible shape and the other wasn't too bad. I still had to sand it, stain it, and put on three coats of poly. And while it isn't the bed of my dreams it turned out darn nice for a $5 bed. My husband has tried to get me to pitch that second bed many times over the years (he didn't think it could be salvaged) but I had thoughts that someday we might have another little boy who would need a bed to match his brother's. Low and behold we did! So that second bed has been my project for the past couple of months. It was a major pain! The veneer on the headboard had pulled away and the previous owners had "fixed" it by taping it down with masking tape. It was a mess! A lot of gluing, sanding and staining later it looks nearly identical to the other one. Boy, am I ever glad that project is done! The only thing I should have done differently is apparently I used a semi-gloss polyurethane on the first bed and a satin finish on the second so they don't have the same sheen. It's not horribly noticeable and I sure don't have the desire right now to change it, but maybe someday!

*Updated to answer Heidi's question about the veneer. I was able to salvage all of the original (Yeah!) It was really delicate work though. The clamping and gluing process took me a long time to finish. There were just a couple of small flakes that were missing and with a little wood filler they are barely noticeable.

Wow talk about a deal!!!
I know beds are expensive, I bought a new bed for hubby and I when we moved 5 years ago and it blew me away for what they wanted for beds.
Your beds do look nice !

I'm glad you persevered--they are beautiful! I love the shape of the foot board. Did you have to put down new veneer or were you able to salvage the old?

Hiya, first time I have commented on your blog. I would love to see more pics of your home if you are ever in the mood, as I love what you have done with your junk/vintage finds.

Again, you amaze me. That was a great bargain, and it so sweet that the boys now have matching beds (and vintage too!). I never pick up things when the veneer has peeled, because I wouldn't have a clue how to fix them.
