Vintage Steelcase Single Pedestal Tanker Desk

This is my favorite buy from last week.  I've been keeping my eyes open for a new desk for my computer for quite a while.  Previously I had one of those giant particle board monstrosities.  A couple months back I bought an old metal desk for my office (which is really more of a craft and art studio - no computer in there).  I almost used that one for my computer but it just wasn't the right fit.

Enter the Steelcase tanker desk.  This is definitely the style of desk I wanted for my computer.  I've only run across the double pedestal style desks before and really didn't want something that massive.  This one is just 45" wide which is perfect!  And I love that it has three regular drawers rather than a file drawer.  I've got the filing issue covered already.

I found the desk at an estate sale.  On day one it was priced at $40 - not bad at all!   But, it was pretty grimy and I had no idea how it would clean up, plus my 3 year old was running loose so I just couldn't make up my mind.  When I got home I kicked myself several times for not buying it!  Fortunately it did not sell on day one of the sale and I went back and picked it up the next day for half off.  Just $20 for the perfect desk!  And to top it off it cleaned up really nice.  The top is in near perfect condition and the drawers glide as smooth as butter.  The color works perfectly with the color of my basement walls.  (The lighting is wretched down there so the photo colors are a little off.)  One more item checked off my wish list!  Of course now I need a different light, a cool old desk phone, and ...

  1. LOVE this desk, and your basement set up is beautiful! Perhaps the most attractive non-cluttered basement I've ever seen, actually...

  2. Very cool desk! As I type away at my own ugly particle board slab, with no drawers - I'm definitely envious of your thrifty find. Good job!

  3. I had one in a really cool style that I had never seen before or since. It had the drawers only on the left and a two tiered top. The top above the drawer pedestal was about two inches higher than the writing surface above the "knee hole". I looked everywhere on my PC and laptop but can't find a picture. Maybe on the other laptop. My mom gave it to me as it was left behind by a previous tenant of her apartment. I sold it on Craigslist.

  5. And....? You're still teasing us. :) Great new desk! I love it with your architectural drawing of the house above it. I used to have a desk like that long ago. I think those desks bring back memories for a lot of us. I have a horrid desk right now that I need to take an axe to, but we just don't have a good replacement yet.

  8. I've never seen a Steelcase like that one. I wonder if it was made for typing.

  9. I'm just a lurker but I'm sooo jealous you found this! :) I've been searching high and low for something like this. I need one a little bigger (I'd be using it as my main computer desk). Great site! Thanks :)

  10. Love the desk! My coworker has one just like it in her office. I work at a University that is always trying to upgrade to more ergonomic, modern furniture. I am constantly rescuing old Steelcase items from the loading dock and putting them in my office.
